Autostart von Programmen in Gnome

Hallo!

Zum Hinzufügen oder löschen von Programmen, die automatisch beim Starten geladen werden sollen, einfach unter System -> Einstellungen -> Sitzungen unter dem Reiter für den eingeloggten Benutzer Startprogramme das entsprechende Programm hinzufügen oder entfernen.

Ganz einfach!

Ubuntu: unable to resolve host

By executing sudo there was the message

unable to resolve host XYZ

With root-rights open /etc/hosts and etc/hostname and change the name to only the hostname - without the domain.

Voila!

Personal Music Server in Java

Hi!

In some magazines there was Sockso mentioned, a music-server, which can stream music through a netword and runs in java. I think, I will give it a try.

How do you find it? Any experience?

just start the program

gnome-volume-properties

by typing it in a konsole and you will be able to edit some preferences concerning some plugin-devices such as USB-sticks and Cameras.

Java in Firefox 3 in Hardy

Hi!

I had some issues with Jaava and Hardy. I just installed

java-gcj-compat-plugin

with all dependencies, and it works just fine!

Optimizing Samba shares in Ubuntu Hardy Heron

Hi!

The problem was, that all the files transferred with Samba to the other Ubuntu Desktop were unable to be deleted.
Therefore I opened /etc/samba/smb.conf and changed the options of the shares (at the bottom of the file):

[Your Share Name]
path = /media/hdb6
available = yes
browsable = yes
public = yes
writable = yes
create mode = 0664
directory mode = 0775
force user = Your Username
force group = users

This maybe is not the safest option, but you are now able to delete and move the files, transferred.

Permanent additional options in GRUB

Hi folks!

On my old desktop-pc I always have to add the boot option

acpi=force

.
In issue 14 of the Full Circle Magazine there is mentioned, that you can add this option in the file menu.lst in /boot/grub at the line

# defoptions

and with each new generation of this file the option will be automatically included in the boot-option.
menu.lst is the file which contains the configuration of the boot menu.

WLan on Acer Aspire 5020 (BCM 4318) and Ubuntu 8.04

Hello again!

After the update from Ubuntu Gutsy to Hardy, Update of the kernel and deleting of the old kernel, wlan wasn't working. From posts in some forums I saw, that acer-acpi is now enclosed in the kernel AND got backported to the actual Hardy-kernel.
In addition to the normal kernel I installed the "backports"-package.
In order to get wlan working I had to open a konsole and

sudo modprobe acer_acpi wireless=1

and

sudo echo 1 > /sys/devices/platform/acer_acpi/wireless

.

cat /proc/acpi/acer/wireless

should give you a 1.
On my system after reboot, wlan is starting automatically now.
